Indiana Cuts Funding For Major Parties
Last year, the Indiana Democrats and Republicans each received more then $660,000 in state funding through an unusual program that gave the two major parties a share of revenue from vanity license plates. Well, no more.

Indiana’s system of funding political parties with license plate money is unique in the nation. And like daylight-saving time, Indiana voted during this past session of the Legislature to end the practice, though the vote and debate was less divided than the DST issue. In fact, there was only one vote against eliminating the subsidy, which came in the Indiana Senate where the issue passed 47-1.
It is estimated that ending the license plate subsidy will cost each party approximately 10 percent to 25 percent of the money they raise on an annual basis. This could be a significant sum during an election year, especially a gubernatorial election year when much is at stake.

Libertarians and others for years have argued that government shouldn’t subsidize politics. And the Libertarian Party itself has made significant gains in Indiana, without the help of funds from license plates.
