QUOTE: "...can I be an active Republican and an inactive Libertarian at the same time?"

Absolutely. In fact, I think you are.

QUOTE: "The LP dues situation is confusing. They announced that dues were going up to $50, but I received a renewal form last week that only asked for $25."

I just checked the site, and you're right. The form only asks for $25. My apologies for the misinformation.

The LP dues situation is confusing. They announced that dues were going up to $50, but I received a renewal form last week that only asked for $25. In the LP News, there was a story that said dues may be dropping to $0 at the national level, with state LP's collecting dues instead.

If dues may soon drop to $0, won't people just way to see if that happens, instead of sending in $50?

Really? My membership lapsed around 1999-2000. Haven't paid any dues or anything in five years... That's interesting, can I be an active Republican and an inactive Libertarian at the same time?

Austin, unless you've specifically requested to not be in the party anymore, you're still a party member, you're just not an "active" party member.

Also, I think the dues were raised to $50 for people who're already members.

A better alternative to Chapter 11, should that be needed, would be Chapter 7--Libertarian National Committee, Inc. ceases to exist--and a new group entirely different shows up.

The situation is really not quite that bad, in that they are not a half million in the hole, the situation that they were in when Jim Lark and Steve Dasbach ended their terms as National Chair and National Director.

Filing for Chapter 11 would be terrible PR, though.

There's always Chapter 11. The LNC is a corporation, after all. But to do that, you have to have a re-org plan with some certanty of success.

Austin: thats the same meaning I pledged to years ago. How dumb of me. It actually means proclaiming yourself one with a future anarchist world that someday might happen, somewhere....after the country fails due to national bankruptcy...and the world goes through a international depression....

I know, but I used to be a member and I enjoyed being kept up to date with fundraising letters and stuff. I might want to go to some events, too.

As for the rather weird little pledge... I take it to mean that I won't shoot anyone in pursuit of Libertarian goals.

To be honest, I'd heard rumors to this effect through Green Party financial contacts around the end of 2004. I gathered there was some danger of them folding up the tent regarding FEC status. I hope nothing comes of this, as I'd prefer to continue to have a palatable opposite-number pushing on the Republicans for electoral reforms in the way the Greens push on the Democrats.

You don't have to be a member to get LP News. The same $25 gets you a subscription and you can avoid the pledge and return the membership card they send you.
