Badnarik Launches Congressional Bid!

Michael Badnarik, the Libertarian Party’s 2004 Presidential nominee, has decided he will seek a Congressional seat next year. Specifically, he will make a run in the 10th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Michael McCaul.

The seat was recently occupied by Congressman Lloyd Doggett who was redistricted and now represents the 25th. Doggett was paired in 2-way races with a Libertarian in 2002, 2000, and 1998. In each race, he defeated the Libertarian nominee by 85-15% of the vote.

In 2004, the realigned district elected Republican Micahel McCaul with 79% of the vote. Libertarian Robert Fritsche polled 15% and Lorenzo Sadun, running a spirited write-in candidate as a Democrat, captured 6%.

For 2006, McCaul is expected to seek re-election and Democrat Ted Ankrum has also launched an exploratory committee.

    Seems like he had better poll over 15% of the vote (assuming no Republican in the race) or there won’t be much to brag about. Looks like that is the usual number in two way races against a Democrat.

    All the guy has to do is release a ad stating Badnarik’s tax dealings with the “861” groups and the IRS, that he wont drive becuase he refuses the licensing requirements, and we have another 15% showing in the making.

    At some point, libertarians have got to understand something: you cant keep running protesters for political office. In America, voters reject such candidates.

    If we fixed the extremist crap in the platform and were in a financial position to actually support our guys, we might get some top tier candidates like Johnson or Barr to run in 2008. Instant credibility as a result. Thats how it works. I wish it didnt work that way, but it does.

    Bob Barr a top tier candidate? For the LP? I thought we ran him out of office, because he was too gung ho for the War on Drugs.

    He’s been outspoken in support of civil liberties since then, though.

    You know, the sad fact is that there is nothing inherently notable about Mike Badnarik. He’s just another small-time legislative candidate/loser who claims to be good with people. He got really, really lucky at 2004 LNC, but there’s no good reason he shouldn’t just fade back into obscurity now.
