I contributed to the Libertarian party recently to thank them for their support of the efforts of Keep Austin Free to resist the smoking ban as an unwelcome compromise of freedom of choice and personal responsibility.

Keep Austin Free is filing suit to try an invalidate the Ban. If you think freedom is worth defending then log onto KeepAustinFree.com. Donate to legal fund. Patronize businesses that are making an effort to defend choice. Visit your favorite bar and ask the owner why they are not actively helping to protect free enterprise. There is so much one can do...

Austin,

Dont get me wrong I am no fan or advocate of the national LP office. What you are experiencing is dead wrong. Also that you heard nada from your state party is bad.

With no direct dues to the national LP I see matters getting alot worse as the funds dry up.

I understand that, but I paid dues before that step took place and was told that my dues would be applied to a subscription to LP News.

Additionally, if they want money from me... they're not trying very hard to get it. I should be a perfect potential donor as far as they're concerned...

Austin....

The national LP recently abolished national dues. Now the national LP intends to depend on appeals. Subscriptions will be sold to LPNews.

Well, mainly I joined as a way to subscribe to a publication (LP News), and I haven't gotten it. That ticks me off a little bit.

What bothers me much more than that is the party hasn't done very much to grease me up and get me to donate more. Or involve me in the party. Or much of anything.

It's not that I want to be involved that actively or to donate a ton of money... but if they aren't doing that to me, are they doing it to anyone else? If they're not, then the party is wasting opportunity after opportunity and it discourages me from giving anything if it's not going to be used wisely and professionally.

P.S. Glad you like the site. I actually don't censor comments at all. ;)

I joined the Libertarian Party a long time ago because I wanted to belong to a political organization that I could GIVE my support for peace, prosperity and liberty. The headquarters is constantly criticized from all angles no matter what they do or what they don't do. There are no longer going to be dues, Austin so I guess retaining you will not be a big goal. However raising funds from will be! Anyway I like your website because you are timely with news and you don't censor comments too much. Keep us the good work and let us know when you get a welcome letter. Well until you do, although I'm not an official, I am a Life Member and LP Meetup Host, so WELCOME to the Libertarian Party, Austin!

If you consult the LP.ORG blog, you will find that extravagantly overpriced DC office and the staff are spending their time, not working for the party, but running a relief operation for a Church in the deep south. They are too busy lollygagging to do the work for which we are paying them.

I got my card a little later than expected but it did come. I'm pretty sure Tim is correct that they are short staffed at the moment.

I didn't use a check, I paid online with a credit card. They certainly got the money.

I'll wait another week or two, but if I continue to hear nothing then I'll probably call and complain.

National is very short staffed right now. I believe they are down 3 persons from normal, and 2 of those had recent week-long vacations.

I would bet thats the cause. The LNC pisses them off and they quit faster than they can hire new ones to piss off in the future! :D

With respect to the newsletter, it is possible that you were slightly too late for the last issue of the newsletter, and the current issue (got to me a day or so ago) is about to get to you. I gather there is no program to send new members the current newsletter.

However, the lack of a welcome letter is very surprising. Did they cash your check? Let me clarify that. The lack of a welcome letter should be very surprising, but is really only disappointing.

I had a similar experience when I joined back in 98/99. Sadly, I'm not real surprised that the LP national office can't seem to handle stuff like this well.
