Candidates who petition themselves onto the general election ballot can choose any partisan label that is not too long and doesn't mimic the name of a qualified party. New Hampshire law on this point is the same as Massachusetts law on this point. Slightly over half the states give petitioning candidates this freedom to choose any label (if it isn't too long and doesn't imitate the name of a qualified party).
