Peirce and Fitrakis Shut Out of Debates
On the good side, Ohio will have an above average number of gubernatorial debates this year…
Four debates are scheduled between Ohio’s major-party candidates for governor, including a final one in Columbus, the two campaigns announced yesterday. It will be the most gubernatorial debates in the state in at least 24 years.
Specific locations were not revealed, but the campaigns said they would establish guidelines for limited on-site ticketing at each event.
Republican J. Kenneth Blackwell and Democrat Ted Strickland will open the series immediately after Labor Day weekend, for years a statewide campaign’s traditional kickoff.
The first matchup is set for noon Sept. 5 in Youngstown, with no specific topic. Sponsors include The (Youngstown) Vindicator and WFMJ-TV (Channel 21).
Education will be the topic of the second matchup, at noon Sept. 20 in Cleveland. This one is sponsored by the Call & Post and WEWS-TV (Channel 5).
The economy will take center stage for the next confrontation at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Cincinnati. Sponsors of are the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and Debate USA Alliance.
The capital city will host the final debate, scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 16. The topic is open; sponsors are to be announced.
On the downside, neither of the third party candidates in the race have been invited to participate in any of the meetings…
The two minor-party candidates — Robert Fitrakis, of the Green Party, and William S. Peirce, of the Libertarian Party — will not be included in any of the debates.

The Green and Libertarian need to debate among themselfves. Yes, this is inferior to debating on the big stage, but it is better than nothing. It will get some limited coverage, at least. Debate right on the street outside of the “official” debates. Hold debates all over the place. Work together. Like Cobb and Badnarik. But I bet it won’t happen. Pierce looks legit but the Green candidate is probably a flake.

I disagree. A minor party debate is akin to saying, “We accept that we belong at the kids’ table”.
The minor parties need to build their relationships with the statewide media and to better make the case for their inclusion.

I would still like to know why a debate which does not offer participation to all legally qualified candidates is not considered an “in-kind” contribution by the sponsors to the candidates who are invited?

So, Mr. Kole, you suggest that they do nothing, rather than something? Minor party candidates need whatever publicity they can get. Hell, if 250 people show up to watch their debate, that’s more than most third-party candidates, even for statewide office, ever reach.
