General 21st Century Peace Symbol

21st Century Peace Symbol

(You may edit and broadcast as needed-----------Don Lake, Citizens For A Better
Veterans Home, www.calvets.blogspot.com, 619.420.0209)

Patriotism, like spirituality can be largely a solitary process filled with lots of
introspection and self examination. Politics is more like religion. To spread the
Gospel (‘Good News’) ya need at least some public relations platform. Mascots and
unanimated symbols are two areas of icons and PR which have very useful to
been discussed at other times.

Coming of age during concerns of nuclear testing and our nation’s hip deep
involvement in South East Asia, one of the most potent pieces of symbolism in the
last half century has been the Peace Sign. The anti War icon began life in the mid
1950s as a Nuclear Disarmament symbol combining the semaphore salutes for ‘N’
and the ‘D’ in Britain. The ‘flags’ were evolved off of the poles in the late 50s, in
what was often referred to as Saint Peter’s up side down crucifix. During the B-52
bomber strikes all around South East Asia, the mainstream peace sign morphed
into an air plane profile, with jet engine pods.

One of my frustrations as a potential live action grunt and Viet Cong target in
the 1960s was that Vietnam was such a replay of federal occupation of the
Philippine Islands in 1898! Hailed as heroes at first, our troops stuck around too
long and the once cheering crowds starting throwing stuff at the one time
‘liberators’! In the 21st Century, our national government has hocked a half a
trillion dollars of our children’s future by doing the same thing in the Middle East.

As a government which started out as an anti Establishment revolt, the USA
has sadly mimicked the traditional [and failed] global empires of yore. Even as
early as the 1830s, criticism for ‘Manifest Destiny’ had already surfaced in North
America. Fifty years later, the Kingdom of Hawai’i was hijacked by multi national
corporate thugs using borrowed American military might.

Populists, muck rakers, progressives [moderate ‘radicals’ and liberty lovers of
all stripes?] were starting to ferment a platform of American Anti Imperialism by
that time. Intellectuals, labor union organizers, academics, and journalists
continued to compare the evolving idea of a Democratic Republic to the very real
reality of a cloning of the British Empire. The same English Monarchy system that
the founding generation fought against! [Note that both Hawai’i and the Philippines
were ‘Christian’ nations at the time of American control and occupation.]

The opposition to foreign adventures and fight against occupations has done
one thing successfully in the 2000s. Where as the opponents of the Viet Nam
quagmire readily abandoned Old Glory to the Pro War Forces, today’s anti War
activists seem to have much less problems with waving the national flag. The bare
white ‘up side down cross with in a circle’ on a blue field with blue and white
stripes was one fairly suitable alternative. The Ecological “e” on green and white
stripes was less popular with the main stream. [Remember that April’s Earth Day
started only in 1970!]

2006 is Daji Vu ----all over again! George W. Bush is really LBJ II! 2006 is
really just a replay of 1966! As important as ‘Decline To State’ Independents and
the members of the smaller parties were in the anti Establishment ‘Revolution
From the Middle’ pressures in the 1960s ------what should Independents, Libs,
Greens and other reform minded citizens do for modern anti occupation
iconography? Some minor and micro organizations have used the stars and stripes
with a ‘V for victory’ fist (or the Libertarian Statue of Liberty giving the same signal
[instead of holding a torch] ). This has already gathered some media exposure and
grass roots backing.

As important as energy and ecology are in the 21st century, the anti
occupation activists need to bring the peace symbol up to date ----and with an
environmental edge. One image that would incorporate the fuel crunch that feeds
modern conflict was developed by Don Lake in 1990. This was during the Iraqi
invasion of Kuwait. The branches of the original [Mercedes Benz] ‘automobile hood
ornament’ can now be seen as the profile of a three bladed wind powered
electricity generator and its support tower. This is a symbol which can criticize the
billions of United States dollars and thousands of American lives wasted recently in
the Middle East with out being called ‘unpatriotic’. It also stands against the
current administration’s almost solitary position against various ecological treaties
and the growing theory of global warming.

Various organizations and coalitions need to spend some time and effort in
presenting a united front, including consolidated icons. Mean while the public’s
frustration with politics and government mounts and mounts.

Like the counter productive buring of American
> Flags,
> instead of reverently marching with the
> International
> Distress Symbolism (an up side down banner).
>
> The Pro Vietnam Conflict, Right Wingers, Traditional
> 'Kill a Commie For Christ' types sure grabbed on to
> the stars and stripes, to the exclusion of the anti
> occupation patriots.
>
> (Casten needs to read some Pysch/Soc/Anthro texts.)
>
> (Wrong headed Head in the Sand:)
> > And it's not about the symbols. It's about a
> theme.
> > What keeps running through my mind are two issues
> > melted into one: Criminal behavior/morality and
> the
> > outcome== war.
> > Hope the dialogue includes the corruption of our
> > laws, the war profiteering, the destruction of
> civil
> > liberties -- "because we are fighting terrorism."
> > And the corruption of media as they print only
> white
> > house bs and hire phony, uncredentialed
> "reporters"
> > to spread even more lies.*
> > Call it an UPSIDE DOWN WORLD.
> > It's the brave new world of the USA.

> > Hi everyone,
> >
> > Below I have consolidated five postings to this
> > list that continue the discussion about a new
> peace
> > sign symbol. This is an interesting and important
> > topic, but it's a bit of a tangent from the main
> > business of this list; people are so overwhelmed
> by
> > the volume of email coming from this discussion
> list
> > that I'd encourage you not to continue this thread

> > simplified art to a button or other
> > > media is the symbol used here Montana's
> biggest
> > 4th of July parade 2004. The
> > > statewide Montana Peace Seekers Network won
> one
> > of four top parade prizes
> > > and a standing ovation from the judges with an
> > entry that featured a 15 foot
> > > tall Statue of Liberty making the V peace
> sign.
> > People loved it, couldn't
> > > argue with it. The other arm carried a large
> > round sign with the "Peace is
> > > Patriotic" graphic that is free to download at
> > Peace1st.org. About 65
> > > participants in the parade scrupulously kept
> to
> > a peace message only,
> > > carrying signs saying what group and city they
> > represented (including 7 city
> > > peace groups, Veterans for Peace, Amnesty, a
> > community of Catholic sisters,
> > > a local church, etc). We learned that a simple
> > message of peace was
> > > effective to gently pull people toward our
> > views. Perhaps as a logo, Lady
> > > Liberty making the peace sign could be
> disarming
> > (pun intended).

> > Dear participants,
> >
> > Concerning a symbol for a new peace sign, my
> vote
> > would be something from the natural world.
> >
> > I would direct us to think of something like:
> >
> > a feather, (like an abbreviation for the peace
> > dove)
> >
> > or
> > a snowflake
> > a certain leaf design
> > a flower
> > etc.
> >
> >
> > something that can be taught easily to children.

> > I like the peace symbol - it has a history and
> is
> > widely recognized around
> > the world.
> > I think we need to design and begin to
> popularize
> > a symbol for justice and
> > wear both of them.

2006 is Daji Vu——all over again! George W. Bush is really LBJ II! 2006 is
really just a replay of 1966! As important as ‘Decline To State’ Independents and
the members of the smaller parties were in the anti Establishment ‘Revolution
From the Middle’ pressures in the 1960s———what should Independents, Libs,
Greens and other reform minded citizens do for modern anti occupation
iconography? Some minor and micro organizations have used the stars and stripes
with a ‘V for victory’ fist (or the Libertarian Statue of Liberty giving the same signal
[instead of holding a torch] ). This has already gathered some media exposure and
grass roots backing.

As important as energy and ecology are in the 21st century, the anti
occupation activists need to bring the peace symbol up to date——and with an
environmental edge.

>

> ‘Kill a Commie For Christ’ types sure grabbed on to
> the stars and stripes, to the exclusion of the anti
> occupation patriots.
>

> (Casten needs to read some Pysch/Soc/Anthro texts.)

Any opinions on the veterans movement and or the so called reform movement in the 21st Century? Did you know that before the Christmas 1776 victories at Trenton and Princeton there was the perfect FLAG opportunity via a coastal fort standing against repeated British assaults near Charleston (South Carolina)? Why is the Fort Moultrie Flag, with the white cresent moon and L - I - B - E - R - T - Y on dark blue field, a FREE public domain, not the official LP banner in over thirty years? Duh?

Libs have done such a great job with the Statute of Liberty, Tommy Jefferson, and the Liberty Bell, why blow off a perfect flag icon????

Libertian 21st Century Peace Symbol, the (NEW JERSEY) Statute Of Liberty with a V For Victory Peace 'Fist' instead of carrying a torch?

Welcome Joe...congrats on the Buckley and Cashin campaigns. Since I began closely tracking libertarian news for my site I have seen nothing but good things come out of Georgia. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your party insight...take care.

Welcome Joe. I look forward to reading your posts. Congratulations on the fine poll showing by the Libertarian statewide candidates in Georgia. I also support them and especially like Allan Buckley's and Kevin Cherry's TV ads. Good luck.
