hey every thing libertarian is a damn good thing....however letting illegals come over here to work?......have you lost your freakin mind? the mexican government supports it ya know why? they're one of the richest countries in the world and have one of the poorest populations....this means the government officials are keeping all the profits for themselves while encouraging illegal immigration because those immigrants will work over here and send their money to their families in mexico thereby contributing to mexicos economy while hurting ours by taking jobs and then sending the money they make out of the country.......heres an off the wall idea whoever wants to become citizens of america may come over and stay in a government furnished housing unit with 3 meals a day heat electricity and all modern conveniences in exchange they work for no pay for a certain period of time to earn their citizenship this would allow the poor ones an equal opportunity to gain citizenship as the rich ones and alot less money would be leaving america while the ones coming over illegally are charged with felonies.....think about it if they have citizenship then they can not work for less then minimum wage thereby giving all citizens equal chances of employment.....oh yeah and im not saying imprison them in the housing units either they could move around freely but be required to carry some kind of temporary id maybe with a tracking device.....just an idea if you open the borders then ya might give equal pay to all but the immigrants are gonna be sending their money back to their country which would by the way have no benifits for us whatsoever. every other issue the libertarian party has i completly agree with so if im not a real libertarian i'll tell ya what i'll form another party and all that will be left of the libertarians is a few hundred die hard types with even less chance of winning an election....p.s by the way that idea was just that an idea if you have a better plan go with it but make sure it benifits your country instead of hurting it like every other plan the dems and republicans come up with

Chris, all I can say is that I got a positive reaction from him when I raised the subject at his downtown Tomah bar. 24 hours is a lifetime in politics. Things change in this business from day to day.

I remember back in 1985 reading an interview with Ron Paul where he said he would not consider a run for President on the Libertarian ticket. Then a few months later he was campaigning for the Libertarian Nomination.

Then in the early 1990s, Ron Paul categorically denied that he would ever leave the Libertarian Party and return to the GOP. Then in 1995 he was back as a Republican.

Things may have changed in Ed Thompson's personal situation or political situation there in Wisconsin, which has made him much more open to a Presidential run.

If Thompson couldn't be persuaded to run for Congress where he had a legitimate (though long shot) chance of winning, then why would he run for President?

Response to Paulie Canoli:

So I take it then you don't want beefed up protection of our borders?

Were you aware that just 2 weeks ago, an illegal immigrant who had already been deported once and had molested a 9 year old girl, killed a cop in my hometown of Houston?

Yes, let those Mexicans who wish to work, and have no criminal background in Mexico come to the US legally. No problem there. But are you really against running a quick background check to those who wish to immigrate at our borders?

And as for Lieberman, damned right I want him to win over that quasi-Communist Ned Lamont.

Lieberman was slammed by Lamont for his support of school choice, tax cuts, privatization of social security and opposition to affirmative action.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought vouchers, ss privatizaion, tax cuts, and ending affirmative action were libertarian causes?

Derrick,

Great comments! Yes, I agree. The Libertarian Party should run a top-notch Presidential candidate for 2008. Bob Barr would be an outstanding choice!!! But it's getting late in the game.

I served as Ron Paul's Travel Aide for his 1988 Libertarian Presidential run. Ron and I campaigned in over 40 states.

But we started that campaign in late 1985!!! That's over 3 years before the election. We're now well into less than 2 years before the election.

Doug Stanhope, comedian, made some noises of running. He'd be great too. But he seems to have cooled on the run.

The reality is that at this late stage it's going to be super tough for the Libertarian Party to find a top-notch candidate like Bob Barr, Jess Ventura, or former NM Gov. Gary Johson.

We've got to go with our second string. And to me that means:

1. Ed Thompson
2. Don Gorman
3. Judge Gray in CA
4. Sheriff Masters in CO
5. Bob Smithers in TX

We need a "semi-celeb" candidate like Thompson in order that we don't get stuck with a 3rd tier candidate like George Phillies, Michael Badnarik, or Carol Moore.

And btw, of the 2nd tier, I think Thompson is by far the superior choice, given that he is the brother of former Governor Tommy Thompson.

Yeah, former Mayor is not equal to US Congressman, but it's a heluv alot better than someone who has never held elective office.

Besides, and you heard it here first, a little birdie told me that if Ed Thompson is the Presidential candidate, there just might be a former state legislator who might run as his running mate for the VP slot.

"Dondero [...] mentioned to Thompson how such a campaign could give great credibility to Libertarians given his elected official status and notoriety."

Get real. Thompson is a great guy and ran a great campaign for governor. But, being mayor of Tomah does not qualify one for the office of President.

Thompson should run for the governorship one more time and win, serve out his term and *then* run for President.

In the meantime, the LP needs a pres candidate with more leadership experience - someone who has run a Fortune 500 company. Or perhaps we could draft Bob Barr to run on the libertarian ticket? (I don't know a lot about him, but have been told that he is ideologically libertarian.)
