I’d like to know who the biggest donors are to the Badnarik campaign. Does anyone have this information handy?

Then again, these guys could pull off an impressive 20% finish and totally silence the critics, but still, that district isn’t very small…I expected more.

There is one good thing to come out of this:

Allen Hacker and Michael Fraudnarik will NEVER be taking seriously again. Fraudnarik will not sully my ballot in 2008, and the LP can move on.

I guess $500,000 is a small price to pay.

Jackasses. They start out pretty good, with well-designed signs, and ALMOST looking as if they might be taken seriously. Then, they pull some crazy-ass stunt like this. NO ONE (especially in rural Texas) gets it, no one cares, everyone thinks they’re insane.

When is the LP “leadership” (if that’s what they want to call themselves) going to realize that they’re trying to get VOTERS on their side – it’s not an “obscure reference” contest. It’s a popularity contest! Morons.

It seems that the secret plan was to wait until the last minute and then accuse Ankrum of flip-flopping (on the flimsiest of issues) and McCaul of taking illegal campaign contributions (without proof, or any semblance of proof).

Unfortunately, the press could care less because there is no proof, and the campaign does not appear to have anyone on staff that knows how to properly write a press release. (Their releases literally cause me pain when I read them.)

To be fair, the sign waving (smile brigade) is a good idea, as where the billboards. But my guess is that most Libertarians will be upset that a half-million dollar congressional campaign achieved the same amount of media and conducted the same amount of activism as a $20,000 campaign.

Also to be fair, TV ads would probably have been a waste of money in that market unless at least a few hundred thousand could have been dedicated just to running them. Or the ads were funny or outrageous enough to be picked up by mainstream media (like Maymin on Tucker Carlson).

Keep in mind that Guthrie has not made a very large media buy—only about $6,000 from what I read. That will truly reach about 5 people if they are lucky. But the semblance of professionalism that buying air time and producing TV ads provides does help with donors and the media.

I don’t particularly like the way the Badnarik campaign was run (which is why I stopped donating). But my guess is that they were trying to run a “traditional” campaign on a budget half of what would be necessary for traditional to work. Had their fund raising goals been met, then I’m sure things would have worked out different. But they should have known that they weren’t going to be able to raise $2 million.

For half a million, anything less than 20% will be perceived as a failure.
