Cynthia McKinney Announces Presidential Aspirations

Eric Dondero just called me from Houston to inform us that former Democratic congressional representative Cynthia McKinney has just announced her intention to run for President on the Green Party ticket.

According to Dondero, around sixty people attended an event this evening at the library of Texas Southern University. Dondero indicated that McKinney was sharply dressed and very articulate but concise when giving her short speech. Following the speech, McKinney held a brief Q&A session.

One issue McKinney addressed, according to Dondero, was her intent to achieve 51 state ballot access. Dondero also noted that McKinney indicated that the Green Party platform speaks well to members of the African-American community.

There was one local news team present, along with several unidentified cameras, Dondero reported. He estimates there were approximately sixty people attending the event.

McKinney served in the House of Representatives from 1993 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2007 as a Democrat in Georgia’s CD4.

Cynthia McKinney should run with Ron Paul.

The new order of Constitutional World Socialism is coming, and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.

  2. matt Says:

First, the guy above me is hilarious.

Second, the Green Party could do a lot worse than Ms. McKinney.

  3. Paul Wayne Snyder, PhD Says:

Kop slapper, kop slapper, kop slapper!

And the [Chula Vista] Congress Member Bob Filner award…..

  4. THL Says:

The red herrings have come out! Cops in my city are SHOOTING unarmed black people in the back for no reason, and Hillary’s husband bombed thousands of kids to death in the 90s. You go, Cynthia.

  5. Deran Says:

Cynthia McKinney for president = Yay!

  6. joe lance Says:

“Dondero indicated that McKinney was sharply dressed and very articulate”

Somebody is a little Joe Biden….

  7. G.E. Says:

    How many people were there?

  8. G.E. Says:

Yeah. A Cynthia McKinney (racist commie) / Ron Paul (anti-collectivist, laissez-faire capitalist) ticket would be the dream ticket! If only there was a way to get Jonathan Taylor Bowels on the ticket too.

  9. will Says:

i searched google and didnt find any news on this

  10. Robert Milnes Says:

The progressive alliance strategy calls for green endorsement of the LP ticket. EITHER one green or one libertarian on EVERY ballot. First come first served on ballots on the honor system. Do this & LP ticket could win with a LOT of green & lib. coattails.

  11. Stephen Gordon Says:

G.E. According to Dondero, there were around 60 people.

  12. Eric Dondero Says:

Cute little story from the event:

As I sat there off to the side, “Cynthia” came by each chair to give attendee her campaign flyer. She caught me off guard. I turned and all of a sudden Cynthia was there smiling at me and passing her flyer to me. I said, “Oh my God, Ms. McKinney.”

She snapped back at me with a huge smile:

    “It’s Cynthia.”

With that little quip, she won me over. Certainly not to her side for support, since I’m a Libertarian Republican and way on the opposite side of the political spectrum than she is. However, on my side of the aisle there’s often a great many of my conservative friends who are vicious to her.

I’ll be sure to defend her in the future, and let them know, that in person, she’s actually a very nice, and congeniel lady.

  13. Eric Dondero Says:

BTW, one other incredibly politically incorrect comment:

In person she is an absolutely gorgeous woman. (Her photos on-line do not do her justice at all!)

She’s a little petite. Very graceful mannerisms. And she’s got a very “Georgia” way about her. She often talks of her home state, and of Georgia values.

I guess she’s not married? Strange, cause she’s extremely attractive and has a very endearing presence about her.

  14. Susan Hogarth Says:

Jeezus, Gordon. Dondero as a ‘source’? That doesn’t speak well of your powers of journalistic discrimination.

    Eric’s fawning is very amusing.

  15. Eric Dondero Says:

Who is this Hogarth woman? Do I detect a bit of jealousy? I’ll do a Google Image search on her, and get back to you all.

  16. Eric Dondero Says:

Umm, well, I did the search.

She’s got a very cute dog. I’ll leave it at that.

  17. Cody Quirk Says:

Ok, so is this story legit, for real?

  18. Eric Dondero Says:

Cody 100% for real. I picked up Cynthia’s flyer and a Green Party newspaper at the event. Be happy to fax them to you, if you doubt the story.

Or, you can contact the Green Party Texas Chairman. His contact info is listed on the back of their newspaper.

On what aspect are you skeptical? You don’t believe she’s actually running?

  19. Babblemur Says:

Cynthia McKinney will be campaigning for President as a Green in Carbondale, IL on Dec. 8, and in Madison and Milwaukee, WI on Dec. 11.

Wisconsin green party’s website is down, but there was a post there with the locations and times for the Wisconsin events.

I also met Cynthia McKinney about a year ago and found her to be very nice. She came across as extremely experienced, rational, and she knows what she is talking about.

It is unfortunate that you can’t talk about african americans and their education levels without sounding like Joe Biden. McKinney is an academic with twelve years of congressional experience. She is highly qualified and I’m glad she is running for President as a Green.

  21. G.E. Says:

Dondero is making a sly conversion here. He sees Giuliani is going down in flames, so he’s hitching his boat to the only less-libertarian person in the running, Ms. McKinney.

    :)

  22. Kn@ppster Says:

    Quoth GE:

“Yeah. A Cynthia McKinney (racist commie) / Ron Paul (anti-collectivist, laissez-faire capitalist) ticket would be the dream ticket!”

According to Freedom Democrats, McKinney voted with Ron Paul 80% of the time on key civil liberties issues—more than any Republican, and more than any Democrat except for Barney Frank. Besides, Paul is only anti-collectivist if you exclude his collectivist positions on gays and Mexicans.

As far as the cop-slapping incident is concerned, I was surprised that more libertarians didn’t take McKinney’s side. The cop in question was manning a machine designed to prevent citizens from exercising their inalienable right to keep and bear arms on their own (public) property. He was by definition a criminal thug, uniformed or not. The only objectionable part of the whole episode was that one needed a congressional lapel pin as an excuse to get past the illegal search site. My only problems with McKinney were a) that she didn’t break the goon’s jaw, and b) that she actually apologized to the goon.

  23. Eric Dondero Says:

    You’re kidding right?

No, hell would freeze over before I’d vote for Cynthia McKinney. I can’t imagine a single issue where her and I are on agreement on. Oh wait, there’s one – Pro-Choice on abortion.

I merely said that she was very nice, and gave a good presentation. Didn’t say I agreed with her on the issues.

Here’s my list of preferred Presidential candidates:

    1. Rudy Giuliani
    2. Wayne Root
    3. Mitt Romney
    4. Fred Thompson
    5. Well, there really is no Number 5. Beyond the 4 above, I’d probably just abstain. Might hold my nose and vote for McCain, but probably not. Maybe Steve Kubby? I don’t think I could ever vote for George Phillies.

So, I’m sticking with Rudy, Wayne, Mitt and Fred, thank you.

  24. Babblemur Says:

    Eric,

You could vote your preferences on the Giant Super Duper Massive Multi-Party Instant Run-off Voting Poll we put up through the DemoChoice website. The post and link to it is here:

    http://babblemur.com/blog/?p=1253

I have to apologize up front to all the Libertarians here because I only had room for four of their 12 candidates, I was capped at 32 options.

With 58 votes cast, currently Barack Obama leads with first round votes (8) but Ron Paul defeats Obama after 22 rounds of eliminating the lowest candidates and transferring their votes to their next preference.

It isn’t a scientific poll, it is just for fun.

  25. Sean Scallon Says:

The McKinney campaign is important because the perception of the Greens is that they are a white leftist radical party and have done poorly attracting minorities to their cause. McKinney may change this if nominated. Now, the question is, will she get a white opponent, or will the Greens feel a tinge of PCism and give her the nomination overwhelmingly? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  26. Eric Dondero Says:

Her campaign is extremely important, but not for the reason you outline above. More so, because if she gets 2 to 3 million votes, it could throw the election to the Republicans.

Now, admittedly, there’s a problem with that scenario. It’s called the Libertarian Party. If Wayne Root is the LP nominee, and Cynthia is running as the Green standard-bearer, they could cancel each other out. I’d expect Root to run the best campaign ever for the Libertarians, probably in the 2 to 3 million vote range. He’ll be well-funded. He’s agressive. And he’s a snap at getting major media attention.

Root and McKinney on the 3rd party front is going to make for a very, very exciting general election.

And notice practically NOBODY is talking about this, cause everyone is so focused on the primaries right now. But you watch. Come late February, when the primaries are winding down, there will be some attention paid to the LP and the Greens.

  27. Sean Scallon Says:

Since WAR will not win the the LP nomination, I don’t think we have to worry about that scenario too much.

Besides its Thursday Eric, shouldn’t you be supporting Guliani?

  28. Eric Dondero Says:

Well, if Root doesn’t get the LP nomination, all the better. That just means that with Cynthia running on the Green Party line, all the votes will come out of Clinton, and the GOP will win.

    Here’s who I support, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in this order:

    1. Rudy Giuliani
    2. Wayne Root
    3. Mitt Romney
    4. Fred Thompson

    Beyond that, I will abstain.

  29. Cody Quirk Says:

How come there’s no regular media coverage of McKinney? I mean Ballot Access News hasn’t said anything about this.

Why the media blackout, are they that fascistic? And Why haven’t you reported this Mr. Winger?

  30. Gregg Jocoy Says:

Cody, I can’t speak to the corporate media blackout of ep. McKinney’s campaign, but Richard Winger has reported on her campaign. In fact this Google search will show that Ballot Access News has covered her candidacy.

  31. disinter Says:

    Gordon talks to Dumbdero?

  32. Eric Dondero Says:

There might be a major news article coming out on the McKinney Campaign in a few days.

    That’s all I can say.

And in all fairness, Stephen Gordon an TPW deserve all the credit for being the very first in the entire Blogosphere for breaking the story.

  33. This is a joke Says:

This is Joke.. why do these morons do this.. she has ZERO chance of winning. She’s a moron.. and a psycho to boot.. this is a joke

  34. a-boogily-boogily Says:

Capitol Hill police should’ve tased her psychotic ass right off the Hill. She makes Al Sharpton look legitimate (which a saying a who-o-o-o-o-o-o-ole lot).

Tase her bro… go ahead and tase her!!

  35. Cody Quirk Says:

Ok, well even though I totally loathe people of her idealogy, nevertheless she’s gonna put a big dent in the Liberal vote for Democrate, just like we’ll put a big dent in the Conservative vote with the GOP next year, so I like seeing her running. She’ll make a better liberal candidate then Hillary.

If we’re going to destroy the two-party system, it should be done by a powerfull political party on each side of the spectrum.

  36. emptyhandkiller Says:

If only Cynthia McKinney was young, not an old hag. If only she was hot, and not repulsively ugly. If only she hadn’t pumped out kids before. If only she was sane, and not a raving, screeching maniac. Then I would gladly pork her. But not now, not ever. She can continue shoving her Hamilton Beach hand held mixer up her hole for her orgasms. Goodbye, fruitcake…

  37. what she did Says:

you should take a look at a film about Cynthia McKinney on freedocumentaries.org.American Blackout http://www.freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=155

She was sabotaged by republicans and blacklisted by the media. She had the election stolen from her with the electronic voting machinesShe raised important questions to rumsfeld directly about the war games on 911…which he ducked. McKinney has the guts that Democrats and Republicans dont. She isnt running to win..shes running to educate. If you watch the film, you will be glad that shes running. Its really a shame what they did to her in Congress…but she knew the risks.

  38. Babblemur Says:

I think it is really telling when the majority of the criticism of McKinney involves variations on her appearance or calling her “crazy”. They NEVER criticize her message or positions because they don’t know them or can’t understand them.

McKinney served 10 years in Congress, she’s smart, experienced, and an aggressive progressive.

I second the suggestion to watch “American Blackout”. get it on NetFlix and you’ll see where McKinney is coming from. Don’t listen to these Limbaugh clones of hate and school yard attacks.
