Blogging CPAC: Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Others Respond to Romney Dropping Out

CPAC 2008 CHAPTER FOUR: The Ron Paul Angle on Romney

I’ll be writing an article on Ron Paul’s speech as I get the time, but thought I’d first provide a few quotes from the Ron Paul wing of CPAC about Mitt Romney’s suspended race.

People who care about “fiscal issues should start looking at Ron,” said Lauren Drew, Arlington VA Ron Paul MeetUp coordinator.

Following his speech, I asked Ron Paul how he felt about Romney dropping out of the race.

“It narrows the field,” said the presidential contender, who added that we are “not disappointed on that.”

Former Paul National Field Director Dennis Fusaro said, “Good riddance to bad rubbish.”

There will be “lots of heartbroken virgins in Salt Lake City,” quipped Attention Deficit Democracy author Jim Bovard.

“[Romney’s] wife got tired of him writing so many checks,” responded former Congressman Bob Barr. He added, “A lack of substance cannot buy credibility.”

I was told by some local Paul supporters that Romney’s staff turned their table in the exhibit hall over for Ron Paul’s use. According to one of of these supporters (his name tag read Kevin O), the guys at the Romney booth, who only had ten minutes advance notice that Mitt Romney was going to drop, are now planning to vote for Ron Paul.

  1. Trent Hill Says:

Im interested to see the next polls that come out.

  2. mketcher Says:

Ron Paul could very well be the last man standing against McCain. Conservatives will be forced to support him—or to support big government.

For a great satire on the president, the mainstream media, and the war on terror, see this YouTube music video from the international award-winning zombie musical feature film, “Song of the Dead.” (www.songofthedead.com)It’ stars horror movie veteran Reggie Bannister (Phantasm, Wishmaster, Bubba Ho-tep) as the president of the U.S. The filmmaker, Chip Gubera, is giving a share of his profits from DVD sales to the Ron Paul campaign. 3. Gene Says:

I wonder how the combined GOP/PTB/MSM blitz worked following Super Tuesday…as one (or all) put out a whispering campaign that Ron Paul dropped out of the race. Particularly effective in the lower NY/central NJ area.

  4. BillTx Says:

One of the few times I can agree with Bob Barr.

  5. Randy Says:

    GRrrrrr!!

Even with Romney dropping of the race….these national (so-called) “News Reporters” Still can’t get their math correct.

ABC’s reporter T.J. Winick reported “... McCain’s only remaining Republican candidate was Mike Huckabee…”.

    what a load of guano…..

  6. Lars Says:

Thanks – great to read some unbiased reporting about Ron Paul.

We are collecting links to articles like yours at www.WhatTheySayAboutRonPaul.com for all the latest reporting about Ron Paul.

At this time it is even more important to show that the support for Ron Paul is still growing.

Did you know that you can go to www.WhatTheySayAboutRonPaul.com and post links to your own articles about Ron Paul as soon as you make them available online?

  7. Richard Says:

This article is a prime example of botched journalism. Go ahead, keep trying to imply association by literary proximity: Paul, Bob Barr, Bovard, Fusaro, do they speak for Ron Paul. If they do, at least let us political neophytes in on the connection. You make it sound like Ron Paul’s the one spouting off anti-Mormon quips, and not Jim Bovard.
How can you be intellectually honest and write stuff like that?

  8. Ozlanthos Says:

Hell YEAH! Next is Huckleberry! Although one must keep in mind 2 undeniable facts: 1) There are still 9 MONTHS to go in this race (ie ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN! EVEN A RON PAUL NOMINATION!). 2) Both Paul and Huckabee have beaten McCaine in previous states, as such it is not too much to expect that it may in fact occur again (like in Dr. Ron’s home state of TEXAS). Have a little faith in your own resolve America! You have permission to change your mind! Don’t wait until after the election to alter a choice you already know you will regret! You have the most powerful repository of your candidate’s history ever available to any electorate in the history of humankind (the internet) USE IT!

BTW if you have any doubt as to what to expect under a McCaine regime, just google his name and “bomb Iran”. Bombs, Rich-people tax-breaks, Deficit-spending, borrowing from China, these bu$h-policies are all McCaine has to offer the American people.

    Vote Ron Paul 08!

  9. Erin Says:

I agree with Richard. Ron Paul has always had class towards his opponents. He may disagree with them, but he has never slandered any of them. In fact, on Jay Leno last month Ron Paul said essentially that it’s a shame that people are using Mitt Romney’s religion as a basis of judgment against him and that it wasn’t right. It’s a real shame that others are attacking Romney and his religion and because it is being done in this “The Ron Paul Angle on Romney” article it would seem that Ron Paul is part of it – if not directly, by proximity and insinuation alone.

It is said that mud thrown at others is still on the hands of those that threw it. Not only are you casting a bad light on Romney, you are casting a bad light on Ron Paul too. That is the real shame of it all.

  10. Alison Murphy Says:

You folks are touchy. How am I missing the mud? I’m even LDS and I’m not seeing how exactly Romney is being smeared above.

You want smear? Romney is a self-righteous flip-flopping Jack-mormon. Why Utah supported him is beyond me. I’m glad he’s gone!

    Ron Paul in 2008!

  11. Shohadaku Says:

Yea Ron stuck up for Mitt when he didn’t need to. Stop associating other peoples words as if Ron spoke them.

I am so sick of the way the media treats Ron Paul. This man is a one of a kind with his vast understanding of all the issues our Country is facing.

Ron supported Reagan before he was mainstream back when Reagan was called “unelectable”. Reagan said “We need to keep Ron Paul fighting for our troops”.

The troops contribute to Ron Paul more then EVERY OTHER CANDIDATE COMBINED as reported reciently by the FEC.
America please pull the wool out of your eyes and see the chance we have of electing a good honest man who stands by and lives what he says.
Research what Ron speaks. Watch a video from the 80’s and you’ll see Ron really believes in our Constitution.
He would be the only man to uphold his promise to Protect it.

  12. Scott Says:

The media is doing worse than ignoring Ron Paul, now they are misleading people into thinking that he has dropped out of the race. The media is still afraid of him and his campaign, and they will not even so much as attack him now that he is so far behind. They want people to just forget that he even exist. We’ve seen the power of the media over the people, so you have to figure that this strategy of theirs is working. Ron Paul needs the media plain and simple, whether they attack him or give him playing time, because most people actually trust the MSM.

  13. John Reading Says:

Americans don’t want a good and honest man. They want free stuff at their neighbor’s expence. They want to watch TV. TV wants a warrior and torture and cops. TV loved 911. TV would love a nuclear war.

Americans don’t do philosophy. They do obesity.

  14. Nigel Watt Says:

Um, where in this article have Mormons been smeared?

  15. Darel Says:

In my district I have maintained postive ties with Mitt supporters as well as McCain supporters… In fact at our local GOP I often sit with some of the local Mitt supporters just to here what there take on the issues. In fact a few weeks ago while two of use were knocking on doors on the other side of the street Mitt supporters were hiting the other side.

I have a Ron Paul sticker on my Boxter and passed a Mitt supporter (noticed bumper sticker and gave the toll lady enough cash to pay for my car and the Mitt supporter I slowed down just a little to see if they would blow the horn and they did and waved it was funny.. Folks we have to build bridges to other camps and stop being such asses I know I have been just as guility… My point is this I did exchange numbers and told them if they needed my help to gain entry to the local college I had a contact for them. Guess what one of them called me tonight and he is now a Ron Paul supporter. he said a few others are also going to support Paul.

So it looks like we can obtain some of those Mitt supporters..

Be nice to everyone and look at what happens.

  16. johncjackson Says:

Some Ron Paul supporters ARE rather touchy. If you don’t know who anyone is, don’t expect the writers of blogs to give you the whole history on everyone.

I assume most people reading this know who all these characters are or at least know how to do some background reading.

Some of the players have their titles clearly mentioned, while the others are fairly well known among libertarian RP supporters at least.

If you think Stephen Gordon is trying to make Ron Paul look bad or associate him with anything “’bad”, it’s time to put the pipe down.

  17. Richard Says:

Go ahead and call me “touchy” and “oversensitive.”
Maybe I am hypersensitive to media bias—I think it’s a good thing.
Don’t you realize that it is the subtlety in media reporting that is the most dangerous. If they were overt in, say, saying that “Mitt Romney’s religion is a cult! We should all shun him and run for our lives!,” would anyone take it seriously? Probably not. It’s the stories they choose not to cover, or the stories they choose to headline on Yahoo; it’s a few carefully chosen incendiary words interwoven amidst an innocuous fabric, a camera angle, and the list goes on. You can call it what you want, but the media folks know what they’re doing; It’s deliberate and it’s misleading.

  18. turbo Says:

The most powerful ‘power’, is SUBTLE power.

Subtle power resides in the thought within the MIND.

    “thought creates” explains this power.

    You have this power.

  19. medialv Says:

It never fails to amuse how a guy (Mc Cain) who traded his patriotism against America while his fellow soldiers languished, was involved in the Keating 5 Savings & Loan scandal, is friendly towards Ted Kennedy could possibly get so many delegates in Super Tuesday.

And why is it hardly ever brought up?

America evidently is full of under educated worker bee drones who think they are somehow not having to pay for their ‘FREE” tax rebate check.

Well maybe they won’t, but their children & grandchildren will.

Instead of that tax rebate check….why don’t we get some of the big chunks of money we all spent overpaying at the pump this year?

Oil company record profits a coincidence? I doubt it as our government approves oil company mergers as fast as possible creating a monopoly situation & then prices go up, up, up

The people in power in this country are in control of the mainstream media as well.

You are currently living under the illusion of freedom.

If you think you don’t, you are a inexperienced fool.

In my business in Las Vegas…. i constantly see Saudi’s & Chinese coming here on vacation, mostly in big groups & all wearing $3,000 dollar tailored Armani suits & the women wearing all couture designer fashions.

Spending money like it is going out of style.

You work your a** off & never see your family, can barely pay your bills & then you vote for Hillary, Obama or Mc Cain hoping for ‘Change’. lol

Good luck with that. You are living in a dream world.

Our politicians are bought & paid for.

  20. Timothy West Says:

Yes to all the above. Truth.

  21. Richard Says:

Stupid question: Is the girl next to him in the picture his daughter or his wife?
In today’s world you never can be too sure.
    :)

  22. Stephen Gordon Says:

    Richard,

She was just a fan getting an autograph.

  23. Richard Says:

    I see. Thanks, Stephen.

  24. Drew Says:

Screw it, you know what? Ron Paul should just get his shit together and run as a libertarian again. If the other parties want to play games and if the media wants to shut him up, just run in a third party. That will hit them where it hurts the most. Especially to those who call themselves Republican. There is no such thing as a Repbulican party anymore. Its called Libertarian today. Republicans are democrates in duisguise. There more to them than meets the eye…in a bad way.

  25. Kevin Houston Says:

Ron Paul should continue to run as a Republican.

But if he is not able to run as a Republican in the general election, he should run as a write-in rather than as a Libertarian (or any other 3rd party)

  26. brenda martin Says:

I am also a latter day saint, and saw nothing offensive in the comment in this article. However I agree with Allison above, I have no idea why so many of my faith have voted for “brother Romney”, if you listen to him during speeches and/or debates, everything he says is opposite to what we are taught by our faith. It makes no sense to me.

  27. Richard Says:

    OK hold up there…
Now that we’re all “coming out of the closet,” I have to give my two-cents worth.

Brenda, you said that “if you listen to [Romney] during speeches and/or debates, everything he says is opposite to what we are taught by our faith.” Which faith are you a member of, exactly—because it most certainly cannot be Mormonism! What you said is downright laughable, I’m having a hard time taking it seriously; and the snide use of the appellation “brother” is not becoming an LDS church member.

    Were you serious?

  28. Cody Quirk Says:

Ron Paul is anything BUT anti-Mormon.

Expect to see more LDS supporting Ron now.
