Andy – Cuz Peroutka was an annointed, unanimous and uncontested nominee in 2004. Baldwin would be this year, but if he stays out, the choices are controversial (i.e. Keyes) or totally lame (Grundman, etc.), so what Trent is talking about seems more plausible this year. Plus, honestly, I think Badnarik was a little too gay-friendly for the CP. Barr has a nice history of bigotry.

If Barr is in, he will be the nominee unless he comes out with a pro-war, pro-Fed, or extremely anti-gay statement. While Mary Ruwart is “the best” candidate, Barr has his advantages. . . So if he’s in, I hope that the libertarians will insist on Ruwart as VP, and she will accept. This would be the best of both worlds.

This might not be a good idea. We all know what happened the last time there was a fusion ticket. The Democratic Party prospered for years and years and still exists. The Populist Party ceased to exist soon after.

Ouch! I don’t think that is something you want to admit. It seems George Phillies is right. The only candidates that have the financial situation to run an effect campaign is George Phillies and Wayne Root.

I would think a Barr LP-CP fusion effort would be great. I would still like to see each party personalize the deal by having separate vice presidential nominees highlighting the very real differences between the two parties. It would also help determine which party was preferred by the voter when they are both on the ballot in the same state.

The ex-congressman wants to run for president on the Libertarian party ticket, and may have his friend Ron Paul’s blessing, reports the LA Times. The McNeocons can’t be happy at this news.

Hmmm, interesting. When will Barr announce and will it come before the CP convention? Obviously the fusionist portion would have to come from the CP’s because Barr will announce for the LP nomination and the CP could just draft him as their own nomine and then fight it out to make sure he’s on ballot as BOTH the Constitution Party and the Libertarian Party candidate.

America would gain by having candidates who truly represent the will of the american people. We are all talking about a need to abolish the 2 party system then let’s find out what america wants and find the two best independents regardless of party and if that means a fused ticket then so be it. how about a politician Gravel or Barr and a business man Jingozian or a professor Phillies, or an activist Nader and a Kubby. OK, then I’ll explain it again. The Heartland Libertarian Conference is not a state LP convention. It is a Libertarian-oriented entertainment event, and its organizers/sponsors, not the state LPs which are holding their conventions in conjunction with the conference (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma), choose who to invite to the debate, as a speaker, etc.

It is entirely possible to attend the conference (for which there is a fee) without attending any of the conventions. It is entirely possible to attend one of the conventions without attending the conference. The conventions and the conference are separate events. It’s a win-win deal. State parties can offer their convention attendees access to a nice event without having to put up money, and the conference organizers can sell packages to the nice event to convention attendees.

Those organizers/sponsors of the conference chose to invite only those whom they considered “top” or “serious” candidates to participate in the debate (they invited Kubby, but as of the deadline for responding to the invitation we didn’t have the money to send him). Entirely their prerogative. No particular candidate is “owed” a spot in such an event, any more than any particular movie is “owed” a screen/auditorium at the local movie theatre. The organizers chose the candidates they thought attendees would be interested in hearing from.
