The price of oil as measured in gold has remained remarkably stable. Even in fiat Euros, the price has not soared nearly as much as it has in FRNs.

Not only do I think Phillies should be rejected in his Quixotic quest for the LP presidential nomination, I think he should be banished from the LP altogether for his flagrant fascism. It’s really beyond the pale.

That is price-fixing, i.e. regulation. He envisages a large role for the federal government in price regulation. If we minimize the size of federal goverment, how can its “price lock” have any effect? Phillies is a federal government statist.

Furthermore, there is no credible price risk here. Instead, the Federal government is locking in a price for the energy it will itself use for the long term, rather than paying far higher prices in future years. That’s not the energy anyone else will use, that’s the energy the Federal government itself uses.This is what my fuel oil company did last summer, which is why I am currently paying $2.65 rather than $4.00 a gallon for fuel oil.

The nuclear power industry is the beneficiary of a huge federal subsidy, namely the liability cap on reactor failures. Eliminate that one regulation, and the nuclear power is substantially unviable.

I would add another concept. At least one state (Oklahoma) has passed legislation that would allow regulated utilities to recoup improvements to transition lines for alternative energy projects (particularly wind farms) by raising utility rates. While not the libertarian ideal, this process at least mimics the market and prevents massive subsidies and bond issues to accomplish the same effect. Just something to consider.

I agree with the heading “Private Enterprise Can Solve Energy Cost Issues” but the notion that they need government price regulations is absurd.

Here’s an idea…let’s reduce the government regulations that stifle energy production. Allow more oil drilling/exploration. If there really ISN’T enough oil in America to make it worthwhile like the liberals say, then let those businesses go in the toilet. Allow more nuclear power. It’s cleaner and more powerful than anything we currently have.

I have no problem with ‘alternative energy’. If it’s reliable and cheap then EVERYBODY will want it.

Those contracts will be underwritten by the taxpayer who will take the price risk. That’s socialist corporatism not free market economics.

Why renewables? Renewable sources are pushing up prices in the UK. A free market in nuclear power is the only option.
