FWIW, Bob also attempted to recruit David Stockman (he was too busy on Wall Street) and G. Gordon Liddy (who would not run as a Libertarian). This was, of course, several years before Liddy’s radio show.

Bob figured that with two celebrity candidates (Means & Paul), he might try to get others. Zappa had been in the news in recent years testifying to the Senate against the Tipper Gore inspired plan to censor some rock-n-roll lyrics. Bob said that each of the celebrities were easily accessible. Zappa was the only one interested, and immediately flew him to California to discuss the idea.

This was all reported in LPNews, circa 1987-88.

I didn’t pay much attention to his positions early in
the campaign, though I did hear he supported the war
in Iraq.

Root’s statement on foreign policy that was posted on this
site includes some “neolibertarian” ideas, but tempered by
realism. So, I find it completely credible that Root was
a neolibertarian before, but has finally come to see how the
supposed benefits have failed to materialize, and that the costs
have been massive.

Still, I am interested in seeing his earlier neo-libertarian statements.

But today, I spoke at the HempFest. I made many of the same points that Root did in this video. But I dare say that I came off better, more believable, than Root. And my “speaking style” makes Phillies look charasmatic. And I don’t think anybody felt they needed a bath afterward.

This totally sucks. For the first time in 36 years, the Libertarian Party finds itself with not one, but two outstanding Presidential candidates: Bob Barr and Wayne Allyn Root. Never before has the LP been faced with two truly great candidates at the same time.

Where were you in 1987? We had Ron Paul, and the candidate we should have chosen, Russell Means. And according to Bob Murphy (that we both served on LNC with), he had Frank Zappa almost ready to announce (something about cancer and spending his remaining days with his family kept him from announcing)!

The LP does NOT need Barr or Root. The LP needs a Libertarian to lead the ticket.

If Wayne had a stronger anti-war stance (from the beginning) and didn’t so much to Republicans I’d be more comfortable with him.

Assuming that Wayne’s convergance to Libertarian is for real I hope that he sticks around the party and continues to develop.

I’m at the point now, where I think we should just flip a coin. Either one of these gentleman would be great for both the LP, and the overall libertarian movement. Both would make us extremely proud.
