Mr. Sparkles,

One wonders, Sparkle-Darkle, just how is it is that in this, your most earnest of relevance seeking moments, you found yourself forced to read even a smiggen of any of my posts in this thread at all? I know, I know, don't tell me. Despite the fact that you were suitably focused and wearing your "I-swear-I'll-never-post-even-a-word-off-topic" sweatshirt, there you were peering away at those terribly enticing but wholly irrelevant comments of mine. But that was my fault, wasn't it? And you know what else was my fault? The fact that you posted a reply just as irrelevant as any I'd posted before you!! Do you think that if we were to work together for a while we could release you from this awful slavery? I
mean, clearly, I would seem to have this strange power over you, you simply cannot resist reading and replying when I write. Would you think a that a talk might help, and if not that, a gentle but effective purgative, perhaps?

Mr. Lowell,

I find that your personal attack on hunters is inappropriate, annoying, and off topic. We're talking about Barr's statement to Gov. Huckabee, not about your ideas of having those who kill animals imprisoned, beaten, and sterilized.

Calling Clark and David slow and handicapped for their beliefs is not adding anything to this discussion. I happen to disagree with your ideas, and yes, you're entitled to your opinion, but stop spouting your bigotry here and let the rest of us continue the discussion.

If I were to rate the "Huck's" joke about B.H.O. I would have to give it a rating of "S.F." for Seriously Funny. It works because it play off of B.H.O.'s well know hoplophobia, an unreasoning and irrational fear of weapons. The real story is the back channel talk among B.H.O.'s aides that he is facing a potential "cohone-gate" scandal of his own. As any student of American history knows it takes huge cohones to be President of the United States. Nobody questions John McCain's cohones, and as Democratic strategist James Carville has noted, if H.R.C. were to give B.H.O. one of her cohones he'd have two. In 1988 Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis was ahead of George H.W. Bush by double digits in the polls until it was discovered that he had no cohones. Needless to say he was clobbered in the election. What B.H.O.'s operatives are whispering about is that if the general public ever discovers that their man has no cohones they'll lose the election in Nov.

Paco: "Lighten up! Can you say “overreaction?”'

Sure, it's an overreaction to an isolated incident; but this is Mike Huckabee we're talking about. He's said much worse, from 'joking' about keeping other candidates' supporters from voting, to apologizing for assassinating Bhutto, to lying about his degrees and his record as Governor -- and got away with all of it so far. Read the sorry record at:

Good for Bob Barr. The Huckabee comment was in very very bad taste. Guns are nothing to joke about. The fact that the NRA audience did not make much sound after the comment indicates they knew it was in bad taste as well.

Clark,

"..i do find pleasure in providing and eating, fish, fowl, game..most all my life..

...i feel pride in conducting myself as a good sportsman..obeying the rules..(i’ve lobbied for a few of them)

..my family loves to eat ‘wild meat/food’..ok, dead creatures..

..i console myself in that i’m ‘saving’ a pound of much-inferior commercial creature meat…slowing down the slaughterhouse line, if you will…achieving a more nutritious, less damaging, diet…getting fresh air…learning/experiencing nature..(i’ve become quite the wild mushroom expert!)...communing with other sportsmen, esp. my dad, brothers, etc. lifelong friends..(great politics!)

...and the women seem to love us getting our carcasses out of the house!..some/most of the time.. ;o)

...i certainly am disgusted and sickened when any animal suffers ‘needlessly’..(here we go)

...maybe i will reach a new awareness near sunset today with the old man casting a #10 muddlers minnow for some members of the char family.. ;o)"

I know, Clark, you thought this was the Gallup Poll. Not sure, though, what you'd qualify for this time around. I'd mentioned above that I wouldn’t be troubled at all seeing people with the attitudes of, say, a David Williams Jr., for example, imprisoned and beaten mercilessly so as to develop what we might call a “clearer understanding” of the issues involved, that they’d then be free to submit themselves for “voluntary” sterilization. So I suppose I wouldn't be terribly moved seeing a outcome like that in your case. But you seem so much slower than David. A handicap of some kind perhaps? Something like that could be mitigating, you know.

Hello Mike,

"So, John, I suppose you don’t like fishing either. How do you think all that meat ends up in the supermarket? At least if I eat a deer, it got to live free instead of being caged and plumped up it’s whole life.

But, I suppose you’re a vegetarian. How dare you kill innocent plants to eat them, their fruits, and their seeds. You pshycopath you….."

Help me clear this up, will you, Mike. You're not writing from a college dormitory room, are you?

I think its interesting that so many of us who rant and rave against the foolishness of "political correctness" are perfectly willing to show themselves as equally super-sensitive and humorless critics if the subject changes just a little. Lighten up! Can you say "overreaction?"

Burt Noyes: "Hmmm, Bob Barr demanded an apology after Mike had already posted an apology on his website."

More accurately: Bob Barr urged gun owners and second amendment supporters to demand an apology, after Huckabee had already posted an apology to Obama on his website.

John: It sounds like you're an advocate of (some) animal rights. That's not something we're going to resolve here, if at all - looking at the closest analogue to the issue, abortion, I don't think it's a dispute that is easily resolved, period. So the best thing to do is disentangle the issues.

Even if animals have a right to life, including a right not to be shot by humans, there would still be 'sportsmen' using guns. There are today - from Olympic skeet shooters, to kids who shoot cans on fenceposts. Barr's comments are completely accurate wrt them: it's irresponsible and insulting to joke (as Huckabee did) about such people going around pointing guns at those they disagree with politically. In that respect Barr's comments were accurate.

Even if Barr disagrees with you on the morality of hunting, which I suspect he does; it's just as irresponsible and insulting to joke about him or any hunters going around pointing guns at their political opponents.
