Awkward outcome for Green Party backing both sides
THE IRISH GREEN party faces a challenges as its high-profile powerbrokers in the Government must now get along with those within their ranks who broke away to campaign for a ‘No’ vote on the European Union.
The Lisbon outcome is a serious embarrassment for the party’s ministers in particular as they grapple with the fact that many of their own members ignored exhortations and instead remained firmly eurosceptic.

The current Irish GP is a yuppie party concerned abt lawns and gardens, it has little to do with Greenism. They have been hacks for the current gov. Hopefully this will end the lawn and garden Greens, and something new will grow?
The Green movement in Europe is split Left and Right, the Irish party was on the Green right of center.

No offense, but since when was Ireland annexed to the United States?

Bob Barf Watch can now officially be called “Bob Barf’s Green Party Watch”.

I have followed the Green Party in the US. and abroad. It seems that with even limited success, there is a divergence between the “leaders” and grass roots members. These “leaders” begin to resemble status quo ploiticians.
Currently the most prominent green in the country, Ross Mirkarimi, has endorsed afghanistan war hawk Obama.
04 GP presidential candidate David Cobb c-span quote on the iraq war: “we can’t just cut and run”
Gremany’s GP is probably the most hawkish of the all. Leaders are quoted in this article:
“Germany Green Party attacks peace marches
By Ulrich Rippert
18 April 2007
Reinhard Bütikofer, who along with Claudia Roth is co-leader of the Greens, expressly defended Germany’s international military missions. The world would be “far more uncertain” without the deployment of German troops in Afghanistan or in the Lebanon, he told the media.
In a press interview, Bütikofer opined regarding the peace role of the German Armed Forces: “Without the necessary civilian construction of the country in Afghanistan and also protecting the important democratic impulse militarily, nothing could succeed.”

Disinter, take a deep breath and relax!
1) You are not an official to change names of websites
2) It’s nice to see people trying to run for office who are not lawyers or part of the status quo
3) With two wars going on, the political parties are starting to cross international lines (isn’t that what war is?)
By the way, it was your links about Bob Barr that turned me into a Cynthia Mckinney supporter. Keep up the good work, but I would appreciate it if you would use a more civil ‘tone’.

Once again, there are plenty of Greens who have not endorsed Obama, but you simply ignore that and keep robotically saying “Ross Mirkarimi” over and over again. In less than a month, we are going to hold a convention where we will be nominating a Green Presidential candidate, NOT endorsing Obama.
‘04 GP presidential candidate David Cobb c-span quote on the iraq war: “we can’t just cut and run”’
This canard was repeated by Peter Camejo long after Cobb had clarifed that he wanted a complete withdrawal from Iraq. If you don’t believe me, read this article in Counterpunch, which is rabidly anti-Cobb:
“Frank: On the Iraq war, do you still think the US should not, as you said to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, “cut and run?” Did you realize that when you said this, that it was the same position of both George Bush and John Kerry?
Cobb: I knew saying those words in particular was a mistake the moment they left my mouth and I have clarified my position ever since. Thank you for giving me that opportunity yet again since I know that some people have refused to admit or recognize that I have clarified my position, consistently and repeatedly. What I meant by that rather unfortunate comment is that the U.S. has an obligation to provide resources to a sovereign—not a puppet—Iraqi government to rebuild Iraq. You can check the consistency of my position on Iraq from the press releases we’ve issued for the past ten months or so: bring the troops home; end the occupation.”

Al Currier – you have have me wrong. It is refreshing to see Bob Barf Watch cover someone other than Barf.

Donna,
Well the fact of the matter is Ross Mirkarimi is a high profile Green and it is unfortunate that he is endorsing Obama rather than McKinney or even Nader. The Green Party was effectivley neutered on a national leve with Cobb’s candidacy and it will be some time before those of us on the independent left feel excited about a Green presidential ticket.

Not all Ron Paul supporters are going to get behind Bob Barr. I’m desperpately wanting NOTA (None-of-the-above) for ‘08. If we had a libertarian running, I’d vote LP as usual. This year, it’s likley Cynthia Mckinney for me (or whoever gets the green nomination).
By the way, the topic of discussion here is GP, not LP.

Laine,
I agree that Ross Mirkarimi’s endorsement of Obama was unfortunate. I wish that he was supporting the Green nominee. However, I think that it is important to point out that there are several Congressional Democrats who have declined to support Obama.
Candidates should be judged on their own merits. The reason that I’m voting for the Green nominee is not to punish Obama for Kerry’s lackluster pro-war campaign in 2004. It’s because McKinney has better positions on the issues than Obama.
As for the Green Party’s Presidential campaign in 2004, there were powerful forces at work that were well beyond Cobb’s control. The Anybody But Bush mentality that pervaded the left, along with the split between Cobb and Nader supporters, effectively made the Presidential campaign a non-starter for the Greens.
