Perhaps so, but putting what's best for the country ahead of what the individidual wants to do is SOCIALISM. “The party system has been a disaster for voters and for our country.”

If it were legal in my state, I would fight to have it abolished. However, the Texas Libertarian Party wants to abolish it for the wrong reason. "But the sense is when a lot of people vote, they check the party and don’t go down the ballot and look at the candidates. We think people should value the candidates more than the party.” -Patrick Dixon (Chairman, LPTX) The first sentence is correct; individuals in the USA vote according to party. However, the second sentence is a contradiction of Libertarianism. "We think people should value the candidates more than the party." Who is, of all things, the LIBERTARIAN PARTY to advocate forcing their will onto other individuals? Some individuals like voting by party, and will never stop. Advocating abolishment of straight-ticket voting because one thinks people should be forced to value candidates is anti-Libertarian. The correct reason for abolishing straight-ticket voting is because it literally prevents third parties from being visible on the ballot they have to work so hard to get on. It is a part of the two party system. Forgive me for being the turd in the punch bowl. I'm sure this was just bad wording on Mr. Dixon's part. Straight-ticket voting is, indeed, a very bad thing. Many of the founding fathers warned against political parties. They were prescient as time and again we see party leaders put party before country. At least we have one party that is smart enough to point out that political parties need to have their power diminished. Getting rid of straight party balloting is a small first step. The next bigger step is eliminating party labels from ballots altogether. The party system has been a disaster for voters and for our country.
