South Carolina LP State Convention and Presidential Debate

South Carolina Libertarian Party

State Convention 2023—Charleston, SC November 10-12, 2023

The 2023 South Carolina Libertarian Party Convention took place in North Charleston, SC at the Hilton Garden Inn. There were 36 voting delegates along with other party members and interested individuals present for a most informative and enjoyable weekend.  Friday night started out with a meet and greet at a local tavern.

Saturday morning bright and early the business meeting commenced with Steve Dasbach, former National LP Chair,  presiding as Convention Chair.  State Officers were elected as well as the SC Delegates and Alternates to the 2024 National Convention to be held in D.C. in late May 2024.

Highlight of the Convention was Saturday evening where a Presential Debate was conducted featuring six presidential candidates:

JACOB HORNBERGER

LARS MAPSTEAD

CHASE OLIVER

MICHAEL RECTENWALD

JOSHUA SMITH

MIKE TER MAAT

Debate was recorded by a professional audio-visual team to enable a high-quality production to be distributed and posted to the media and to all Libertarians and libertarians alike as well as any other interested parties.  Debate was hosted and moderated by Anthony Davies and James R. Harrigan, professors of economics as well as co-hosts of the weekly podcast Words & Numbers.  The candidates were forthright with their answers and explanations thereof and respectful throughout the entire event to each other and to all those present, unlike the you-know-who of the duopoly.

More detailed, written information from each of the candidates was conducted and compiled from the candidates themselves throughout Saturday by Stewart Flood and soon will be published and made available at Third Party Watch and thereafter most likely posted on various other platforms.

Sunday was a morning, half-day workshop presented by Tyler Harris and Kelsey Lyon on Activism & Campaign Training which was well received by both new-comers and long-timers.  Members of SCLP participated in filling blessing bags to be placed in boxes to be distributed throughout the Charleston area in memory of a long-time member and friend of SCLP James Pitts Marsh.  Blessing bags contained food products, hygiene items and various personal items.

I look forward to hearing comments on the debate. I’m glad to see that blessing bags were assembled for distribution. When I worked at a 911 center in the DC metro area, we had a blessing bag drive every year. The bags were distributed to the local homeless community at the various encampments they’d established in the area.
