I wonder if Spain would like to buy them back?
IMO, the best option for Puerto Rico, and the other territories as well, is associated statehood, like Micronesia, Marshall islands, and Palau. They would be technically independent, but the US would guarantee their security so that they don’t get taken over by a hostile power
Trying to blame a financial oversight board for Puerto Rico’s mess seems a bit dishonest, given that the only reason Obama created the financial oversight board in the first place was that Puerto Rico’s finances were already a mess.
Puerto Rico had the opportunity to apply for statehood in 2009-10, when the Democrats controlled the federal government, and it failed to do so. It could apply for independence right now and, as much as Trump would like to expand the US toward Canada and Greenland, I suspect he would get behind an effort to dump Puerto Rico for demographic reasons. If Puerto Rico wants to go that route, now is the time to apply for it. So far, it hasn’t.
