The LPAL successfully had its civil penalties reduced by an appeal from $10,270.74 to $2400. The issue was violations of the state Fair Campaigns Practices Act, requiring campaign filings during the last election year. The reduction in the penalties was recommended by the Alabama Secretary of State’s General Counsel.
According to the LPAL Attorney, LPAL gained a new Treasurer, who was not told what to do. He was allegedly given incorrect information about how many filings he had to make in an election year, so he missed every required filing.

Being a state party, treasurer is a horribly difficult job. Especially in situations where you file both at the state level and with the Federal Election Commission.
I will say one thing about my former party: in the close to two decades I was involved, they had a total of three state treasurers, the later two of whom did excellent work.
If your state treasurer either does not know how to do the job, or is not shown what is needed to do the job, you are in big trouble.
Why, after 50 years, are state parties electing leadership that doesn’t know the job? I may be wrong, but are there still officers whose qualifications are they put their hand up when somebody said “we need someone to be our…….?”
