Statement of Alicia Dearn on the LPNM-LNC Lawsuit

Ms. Dearn writes:

I’m defending the Libertarian Party of New Mexico in a lawsuit brought by the Libertarian National Committee.

I find the lawsuit offensive. Mainly because they have sued five individuals on the LPNM ex com.

I’m almost certainly going to get the individual defendants dismissed in a few months due to lack of legal merit. But in the meantime, they suffer emotionally from the fear and betrayal that comes with being sued by people they once considered allies and friends.

It’s immoral for the LNC to sue five volunteers in their own political movement.
Categorically. Unequivocally. Wrong.

Volunteers!

I don’t agree with the lawsuit against the LPNM but at least suing the organization is a layer removed from directly harming innocent people.

Suing volunteers, however, is abuse.

The lawsuit started with the last LNC as they were on their way out. But the new LNC persists in the abuse, twice voting to keep it going.

Before now, I had vouched repeatedly for Evan McMahon as LNC Chair. I thought of him as a friend, even. But this is terrible judgment and just plain wrong.

I have already left the LP. I thought with Evan as chair that I would see change that might convince me to return. Now I doubt that will ever happen. It will take me a long time to forgive this harm done to these innocent people who only wanted to give of their time and treasure to a cause they believed in.

They can barely afford my defense even at significant discount. And the emotional harm will probably drive them out of the LP forever too. What an utter waste.
