A report and some questions from Nick Sarwark. Nick writes:
The Libertarian Party sent a fundraising email. The full text is reproduced for those members who may not have received it.
“Local elections play a crucial role in safeguarding our liberties. That’s why we’re reaching out to you today with an urgent plea: support your local Libertarian candidates in the upcoming elections.
Why are local elections so important? Because they provide a unique opportunity for libertarians to enact meaningful change at the grassroots level, including through the powerful tool of local nullification legislation.
Help us spread the local nullification message and elect local Libertarians to start nullifying with a donation today
Local nullification empowers communities to reject unconstitutional or overreaching laws imposed by higher levels of government. It allows local governments to declare such laws null and void within their jurisdictions, effectively standing up to federal and state encroachments on our freedoms.
But we can’t do it without you. Your contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference in our campaign efforts. It could be the difference between electing a libertarian who can use nullification to reduce harm in their community, or electing another local tyrant.”
Clicking the highlighted text or large donation button leads to a fundraising landing page for the “Candidate Support Fund.” That page lists five specific areas of candidate support:
1) Candidate Workbook
2) Online Training
3) Voter Gravity
4) Regional In Person Training
5) Candidate Website Templates
There is no mention of any specific local candidates who have been assisted through the resources of the Libertarian Party, no metrics for how many workbooks have been produced, what level of effort and money went to Online or In Person training sessions, or the status of candidate website templates even though many states have already held primary elections.
Are there any LNC reports that have been provided with the status and metrics related to the “Candidate Support Fund”?
Is that fund segregated, or do donations from this page go into general LNC funds to be used to support rallies and contractors?
Who is responsible and accountable for the success or failure of candidate support efforts, in the absence of an Executive Director, Operations Director, and Political Director due to staffing reductions?
If there is an LNC committee or subcommittee, have they published reports of their goals, plans, and results?
Sending out a fundraising email is a good first step to getting the Libertarian Party back on track, but donors should be able to know how their donations are going to be spent and how previous donations were spent before sending in limited resources that could go to other libertarian causes.
I am so going to use “seditious nonsense” in the future. That phrasing is both hilarious and accurate at the same time.
“Local nullification” is seditious nonsense. It joins “Defend the Guard” in that category.
Isn’t local refusal to assist ICE a form of “local nullification”?
No. Commandeering doctrine. Fate of Prohibition, when states repealed their state Volstead acts.
