Long-time Libertarian and medical activist Durk Pearson passed away on October 26, 2024. He completed degrees at MIT, where I knew him, in physics, life sciences, and psychology. He was a member of the class of 1965; his presence at MIT did not quite overlap with the formation of the MIT Radicals for Capitalism, an Objectivist-influenced anti-socialist MIT Student Club. His book Life Extension, written with his wife Sandy Shaw, reportedly sold more than 2 million copies.

Durk and Sandy brought a lot of happiness and delight to many people. I particularly recall an article roasting Ayn as I’m Grand, and poking fun at Dork Person and Sandy Pshaw. Their choline concoctions got me through many a tight deadline and cramming for lots of exams. They made the LP fun. Believe it or not, the LP was a fun party back then–we repealed a lot of bad laws with law-changing leveraged spoiler vote clout. We used to have members, donors, volunteers, growing votecounts, goodwill… thanks to folks like Durk and Sandy, and yes, thanks even to the Russian harridan who–with all her smarts–didn’t understand spoiler vote clout.
I am sorry to hear of Durk Pearson’s passing. I think that he and his wife, Sandy Shaw, made a positive difference in the lives of many people. From what I have read the couple were geniuses.
R.I.P. Skye D’Aureous. He stayed at my home one night, charmed all the neighborhood kids with his colorful costuming and peaceful message.
