LPUS Membership Continues Decline

The count of Sustaining Members in the Libertarian national party fell from 9296 at the end of November 2025 to 9090 at the end of December, a decline of 206 people. The count of Life members, who are also counted as sustaining members, remained constant at 3308. The total count of members rose from 237,651 to 237,670, an increase of 19.

As there are 3308 Life Members, at the end of November there were approximately 6000 dues-paying members, meaning that on the average every month 500 people have their memberships expire and needed to renew. A loss of approximately 200 members indicates that around 40% of members are leaving the party when their memberships expire, on top of which the rate at which new members are joining the party must be quite limited.

I sold my pickup (with Galt licence plate frame) to an Austinite who proudly showed me his Life Member card. After the Gary Campaign I was tempted to buy such a card–but then the Jesus Caucus Republican infiltrators showed up in force to turn the National LP into another Tea Party or YAFers for Trump organization. That ended THAT!

They do not give Life Member cards any more. Just a pin.

I question the accuracy of the number cited for lifetime members. Aside from the obvious that all might not still consider themselves members, I don’t believe an effort has been made to remove deceased lifetime members. The list at lp.org shows about 109 lifetime members for Michigan. I know for a fact 7 of those listed are deceased, some for many years.

Unless some writes (obviously assuming they are alive), to revoke their life membership, they are still members. However more seriously that number is wrong in other wrongs. They lost who signed the pledge and just assumed that people who donated enough to be a life member signed the pledge. The database is a mess and I have zero confidence that delegate numbers are correct.

Without me taking the time to read the bylaws does anyone know if the regional representatives can be removed by their region? For example if the members in the region come together and vote to remove the Chair of the LNC or anyothers on the committee is that allowed in the bylaws?

Regions can remove their reps, but it depends on the regional agreement wording.

But the members of a region cannot remove the LNC members beyond their rep. Best they can do is a no-confidence vote and vote them out at the national convention.

They left the party long before their dues expired. It’s just that the party don’t realize it until the income they took (and took for granted) stopped showing up. Renewals is a science. If you don’t have anyone familiar with it leading it – you’ll never see the signs until you’re the last person in the room.
