LP National Membership Now Below 10,000

Last updated on May 1, 2025

The count of dues-paying members of the Libertarian Party fell from 10,177 at the end of February to 9,954 at the end of March, a decrease of 223 members or 2.2%. The report claims that the decrease was only by 1.64%. We do not offer to explain the discrepancy.

Looking back a half-year, the decrease was from 11,461 at the end of September 2024 to 9,954 at the end of March, a decrease of 1507 members or 13.1%.

Dec 1993 was the last time it was under 10K.

The individual amounts for February on both the February and March reports sum to 10,117 but, otherwise, yes.

I’ll also note that the column headings for the individual state breakdown on the February report read “December and January”, rather than “January and February”.

The 1.64% comes from the actual number of sustaining membership on the national level: the reported number of 10,177 is inaccurate by 60, with the actual number, after adding up the individual amounts for each state and DC, as well as Other, together being either 10,116 or 10,117 depending on if it’s the February report or the March report respectively.

Even with the percentages using the correct values, the percentage is still inaccurate due to them using the wrong formula: instead of having the percentage calculated via (Present Month – Past Month)/Past Month, the formula they used was (Present Month – Past Month)/Present Month. In two ways then were the numbers inaccurately reported on the February and March reports.
